Baldur’s Gate 3 is set to receive a new difficulty mode that will limit players to a single save file and permadeath.
A new achievement for the game called Foehammer, which refers to an Honor mode, was spotted on the GOG launcher and shared on the game’s subreddit. Fans of developer Larian Studios recognized Honor mode from its previous appearances in Divinity : Original Sin Enhanced Edition and Divinity: Original Sin 2.
In Divinity games, Honor Mode only allows players one save, whether it’s a manual, auto, or quick save. Permanent death is enabled and if the player’s entire party dies, the save is erased. All of this is on top of the extra difficulty added by Tactician Mode, the second-hardest option after Honor Mode.
The prospect of permanent death and a beating with no saves in a campaign that could last up to 100 hours is mildly terrifying. One unfortunate roll of the dice could spell the end of the game and erase hours of progress.
Larian has not officially announced Honor Mode for Baldur’s Gate 3, and it remains to be seen if it will be changed to work differently from the Divinity games. Anyway, since I’m still in my first Normal mode campaign, I’m going to leave Honor the Foehammers mode for now.
The most recent major patch for Baldur’s Gate 3 added a colorblind mode, along with a huge amount of additional fixes, but unfortunately ruined the sex speedrun with Lae’zel. Larian is still aiming for an Xbox release of the game before the end of the year.
