Nine people were found dead in Turkey after violent weather, while eleven sailors are still missing in the Black Sea, the Turkish Interior Minister announced on Monday.
“Nine of our fellow citizens died because of the storms (…) and extreme rains,” Ali Yerlikaya said during a press briefing in the province of Zonguldak (northwest), where four people found the dead.
Five other people, including three children, died in floods in the southeastern provinces of Batman and Diyabakir, he said.
The body of one of the twelve Turkish sailors missing off the coast of Eregli, a port in Zonguldak province, was found Monday morning, he said.
The Turkish-flagged Kafkametler ship sank after hitting a breakwater on Sunday morning while leaving the port of Eregli, about 200 kilometers east of Istanbul, Yerlikaya said.
Search operations, previously made impossible by weather conditions, were launched on Monday, he announced.
Another ship, flying the Cameroonian flag, broke in two on Sunday in Eregli under the violence of the waves, after its entire crew was able to be evacuated safely.
Winds of 130 to 140 km/h swept the area, forming waves of eight to nine meters, according to the Minister of the Interior.
