Pierre Gasly set a surprise best time for AlphaTauri in a very eventful final practice session in Baku which saw championship leader Max Verstappen collapse and Mercedes continue to pursue a breakthrough in pace.

Lewis Hamilton finished third but benefited from a massive tow in F1’s longest straight behind Sergio Perez’s Red Bull on the final lap that got him there.

Teammate Valtteri Bottas did not and finished 13th behind sister Mercedes, who struggled for speed on just one lap throughout practice and seemed by no means assured of qualifying from the front rows.

Verstappen should certainly be looking for pole from 1pm in qualifying but was excluded from the final practice laps after hitting the barriers at turn 15. Breaking his front wing and damaging the car’s suspension, the Dutchman didn’t was able to barrier and was forced to miss the rest of the session.

Perez, the point guard on Friday, finished three tenths of Gasly’s unexpected flight effort of 1: 42.251.

Ferrari remained in the field in the lead, with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz fourth and fifth respectively, while Lando Norris was sixth for McLaren.

Both Alpine were in the top 10, Fernando Alonso their lead rider in seventh place on what could be the most competitive weekend since his return to F1, while Yuki Tsunoda was also off to a good start in the second AlphaTauri in the top eight.
