Briton Joe Salisbury celebrated a victory over compatriot Jamie Murray by qualifying for the men’s doubles final at the Australian Open.

Defending champions Salisbury and his US partner Rajeev Ram defeated Murray and Brazilian Bruno Soares 6-4 7-6 (2) at Rod Laver Arena.

Fifth-seeded Salisbury and Ram will face Ivan Dodig of Croatia and Filip Polasek of Slovakia in Sunday’s final after the pair beat Croatian second-seeded Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 4-6 6-4 6-3.

“I think it took us a little while to get into the game. The conditions were a bit different today. Obviously very hot, the pitch is quite busy,” Salisbury said during his interview on field.

“We just got better throughout the game. I think we struggled a bit in the return matches in the first set but we were serving well so we knew if we were sticking in there and playing a good one. tie-break. We just got through it. And then we played better in the second set. “

Salisbury and Ram needed an hour and 45 minutes to defeat sixth seed Murray and Soares.

The transatlantic duo dominated in their first serve, winning 81% of first serve points compared to just 64% for Murray and Soares, and converted two of the three break points as their opponents broke only once. on two occasions.

“Really happy to have made that first set. Obviously I think that was the key to the game,” said Ram.

“These guys have been playing together and pretty well for a while, so we knew we were going to play today. I think we upped our level at the very end of this breaker, which got us through the line.”
