At least 2 people hit by truck during event in Florida

At least two people were injured after being struck by a pickup truck at the start of a pride parade in South Florida on Saturday night.

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, who was at the The Stonewall Pride Parade event, with U.S. Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Ted Deutch, confirmed the incident on Twitter and said the driver was in custody.

“I’m lucky to be safe” Fried tweeted. “All of us here praying for them and their families.”

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment. It was not immediately clear whether the driver had acted intentionally.

Chris Caputo, a municipal commissioner at Wilton Manors, said on Twitter that it was “more and more likely to be an accident”. But Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis told WSVN-TV the driver sped up through the crowd, describing the incident as a deliberate attack on the LGBTQ community.
