The Houston Astros, the AL West division leaders, have a solid 35-20 record and a comfortable cushion over the rest of the competition.
The Seattle Mariners are 25-30, fourth in the division and 10 games behind the Astros.
With talented hitters such as Yordan Alvarez, Jose Altuve, Jeremy Pena, Yuli Gurriel, Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker and Michael Brantley (to name a few), you would think the Astros offense is a long way off. better than Seattle, right?
Well, it’s not… maybe it’s better, but the raw totals, at least, don’t show it.
The Astros beat writer Brian McTaggart opened our eyes to a shocking fact: the Mariners have scored more points than the Astros in 2022.
Yes, it’s true.
“Would you be surprised to know that the Mariners (229) scored more points than the Astros (227) this year?” he tweeted.

To answer Mr. Taggart’s question: yes, we would be surprised.
In fact, let’s throw another fun fact over there while we’re at it: the Texas Rangers have scored almost as many points (226) as the Astros.
Additionally, the Los Angeles Angels scored 20 more points than Houston (247) heading into Tuesday’s games.
Astros pitch makes the difference
The big difference between the Astros and all of these teams is their pitching squad.
They got consistent and efficient innings from Justin Verlander, Framber Valdez, Cristian Javier, Luis Garcia, Jake Odorizzi and many more.
The same cannot be said for the other teams in the division.
That’s why the Astros’ run differential is a solid +45, while the second-best team, the Angels, is at +10.
Before the season, the Mariners and Angels were expected to give the Astros a hard time in the division.
That still hasn’t happened and Houston once again looks like the favorite to win the AL West.
