Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Emiliano Buendia from Norwich on a five-year contract for a record club transfer fee that could reach £ 38million.
Buendia has been named the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Season after playing a key role in the Canaries’ return to the Premier League following their relegation in 2019/20.
He has scored 15 goals and recorded 16 assists, creating more chances than any other player in the division.
The 24-year-old midfielder’s signing was confirmed by Villa after passing a medical after being part of the Argentina squad for their 2-2 draw with Colombia in their World Cup qualifier. .
“Emiliano has just completed an outstanding season for a Norwich side who won the league with 31 combined goals and assists and was named league player of the season,” Villa head coach Dean Smith said on the club’s website.
“He’s just as capable as a wide forward as he is as a number 10 and is a great addition to our attacking options. We’re delighted to have made such an exciting signing so early in the summer and we look forward to Emi joining us for a full preseason. “
Analysis: Villa does not waste time adding creativity
The Gérard brand from Sky Sports:
Dean Smith hinted at the end of last season that creativity was their priority in the window, and they wasted little time securing it at Buendia.
“Jack Grealish’s 12-game absence between February and May is proof you need that the majority of Villa’s creative tasks were on his shoulders. Villa only won 21% of their games without him and 54% with their skipper.
“Buendia topped the charts in chances created (122), assists (16) and last-third completed assists (735) in the league last season, but for those who doubt his ability to step up a division, his statistics in the Norwich Premier League campaign Despite his relegation, Buendia is fourth in created chances (83), behind Kevin De Bruyne, Grealish and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
“Whether Grealish will play to the left of the top three next season or more down center as a No 10 remains to be seen – Villa still doesn’t know his best position after playing him roughly 50-50 in both areas since his promotion to Prime Minister But wherever Grealish starts next season, Villa needed to strengthen himself in large areas.
“Although Bertrand Traoré, Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet have scored important goals, there is a feeling that Villa needed something more consistent from the wings, and the hope is that Buendia will provide it.
“Considering how quickly Villa has moved into this window, coupled with the fight against Arsenal competition, this is a signing that Villa fans say shows huge ambition.”
