Asian Cup 2022: The Asian Cup will be transferred to the United Arab Emirates amid the crisis in Sri Lanka

Asian Cup 2022: In what would be a huge financial blow to Sri Lankan cricket and the economy, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has begun preparations to move the 2022 Asian Cup away from the island nation. Sri Lanka was named host of the event, but the current climate of civil war in the country prompted organizers to opt for a change. The tournament, which is due to start on August 26, is unlikely to be postponed. Asian Cup 2022: Amid political turmoil in Sri Lanka, Asian Cup set to move to UAE despite Pakistan backing – Follow live updates

According to a report from Cricbuzz, the Asian Cup could well and truly be moved to the United Arab Emirates as the ACC are stepping up their preparations for the same. Sri Lanka was due to host the six-team event, but was hit by a major political crisis and talks to move were initiated. If the move happens, SLC is expected to lose $5-6 million in revenue from tickets, sponsors and other partners.

According to the report, talks between the ACC and the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) have already started. ACC chief Jay Shah has excellent links with the UAE, with a season and a half of the IPL and the 2021 T20 World Cup being hosted there by the BCCI. The SLC, meanwhile, has been kept up to date with a day-to-day approach taken on the same.

SLC were initially confident in hosting the event, having hosted Australia for a full tour. Things have changed since the Sri Lankan president fled the country, sparking violent protests with fans even scaling Galle Fort in the 2nd Test against Australia. It turns out that the SLC was under pressure from the government to host the event, but now, with a change in leadership, it has echoed the possibility of change.

“In such a scenario, it is felt that the organization of the championship is not appropriate,” an ACC member told Cricbuzz on Saturday.

The move would come despite Pakistan’s support for Sri Lanka for hosting the event. The SLC and the PCB have close ties and the former believe that a change would cause massive losses for their neighbors. Pakistan kicked off a two-game Test series in Galle on Saturday and PCB CEO Faisal Hasnain contradicted the relocation claims.

“Similarly, there have been no problems with the ongoing Pakistani tour of Sri Lanka as we are in constant contact with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and our Embassy in the country. Our discussions with representatives of the ACC have suggested that the tournament is on track at the moment as they are monitoring the situation very closely and we will support their decision,” PCB CEO Faisal Hasnain said.

With just over a month to go, a decision on that should be made soon. BCCI Secretary and ACC President Jay Shah is overseeing the developments.

The 2022 Asian Cup will be a T20I tournament which will take place from August 27 to September 11. Ahead of the main tournament, a qualifier is scheduled between teams from Hong Kong, Kuwait, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. The winner of the qualification will join Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka who are the Asian teams in their own right.
