She paves the way for Hispanic women in a field dominated by white men.

Sparks are constantly flying and something is always breaking on the 45 miles of belts at Palatine’s huge UPS facility.

Don’t worry, apprentice mechanic Estella Garcia is here to solve the problems.

Apprentice Mechanic Estella Garcia and her team.

“Check all the sprockets, chains, pulleys,” she said, listing some of her daily tasks.

The single mother of two started at UPS as a package handler. She worked during the day and attended mechanical school in the evening, thanks to the education services of UPS. There was a lot of study, training and a huge test.

“I loved working on cars with my dad and stuff like that, but I didn’t know the proper terms for those things,” Garcia said. “If it was easy, everyone would be there.

UPS hopes to recruit more unicorns like her. According to some estimates, women make up only 24 per cent of employees in the transport sector; only about 4 percent of workers in the industry are specifically Hispanic women.

“If there are language barriers, we can definitely work with that,” said Chris Szwarc, answering our question about exactly how he’s trying to increase the number of Hispanic women in his mechanical maintenance program.

“We have a recruiting team that is going to solicit, and a lot of the material is in different languages,” said Szwarc, who is a UPS installation engineer.

He added that at least some instructors are bilingual and that many recruits to the program are through word of mouth among existing employees.

“The kind of what I associate with is a Tejena,” said Garcia who had a Frida Kahlo sticker on his helmet. “She was a very strong and very empowering woman and many women admire her.”

Maybe some will admire Garcia by now, especially if you watch our CBS 2 video of his welding, grinding, and electrical troubleshooting.

“My mother said to me ‘You should talk about it [her job]. It’s bada **. ‘ I don’t know if I can say that on TV, ”Garcia said with a laugh.

She’s happy to create a buzz about hot opportunities, especially if it opens the door for other women like her.

People interested in heavy and hands-on work can join the mechanical maintenance program without any experience, but most often are UPS employees promoted from within. We mentioned that Garcia started out as a package manager.

UPS is currently looking for thousands of parcel handlers at facilities in the Chicago area. Many of these positions are seasonal until January 2022.
