Aubameyang hasn’t scored for Arsenal since October 22 and managed to miss a great opportunity just two yards away against Newcastle last Saturday.
Arteta, however, praised the 32-year-old for his ballless work and highlighted how his willingness to come back helped Arsenal grab the second goal in the 2-0 victory.
Arteta wants Aubameyang to continue his defensive work, especially when Arsenal travel to Old Trafford on Thursday, with the manager not worried about his striker’s lack of goals.
“It’s not negotiable,” Arteta said. “If we want to play the way we want to, our attackers have to keep putting pressure on this ball every time.
“And this moment changes the momentum of the game [against Newcastle] a little bit, because a few minutes later we score the goal again in another high pressure situation after recovering the ball and being placed in the final third.
“This is what I demand. Getting the ball to the bottom or not is sometimes a matter of millimeters, a second – Auba has that ability and he hasn’t lost that ability.
“So what he can’t lose is the rest, thinking, ‘I’m not going to do some of that [defensive work] now to score more goals ”.
” It does not work like that. It works, for me, in the opposite direction because he had four opportunities to put the ball in the net [against Newcastle]. “
