“In addition to injuring his right knee, evaluations and scans confirmed that Granit Xhaka suffered a major injury to the medial ligament of the knee,” a statement said.

“A specialist consultation took place in London on Tuesday evening which determined that Granite does not require surgery.”

The Swiss captain put on a fine display against Spurs, but managed 82 minutes of play after a challenge from Lucas Moura left him in severe pain on the ground.

Xhaka returned to the pitch after the final whistle to applaud the supporters, with heavy straps visible on his right leg.

Manager Mikel Arteta first commented on the injury, saying: “Unfortunately he got injured and I’m quite worried because it doesn’t look very positive at the moment.”

Images have since emerged on Xhaka’s Instagram showing the midfielder’s right leg heavily tied up and secured with a heavy brace.

The midfielder was heavily linked with a summer move to Jose Mourinho’s Roma side, but eventually signed a one-year contract extension with the Emirates, keeping him in London until 2024.

Xhaka had received criticism for his performances in Arsenal’s first three Premier League defeats, but played a leading role against Tottenham.

Xhaka was seen correcting a terrible short pass from goaltender Aaron Ramsdale, before starting the movement that led to the Gunners’ second goal of the game.
