Gareth Southgate confirmed last month when naming his senior side for the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary that the 21-year-old was “very close” to receiving a first call-up.
And those words were kindly received by Smith Rowe, who is motivated to continue to impress and seize this chance for England with just over a year to go for the 2022 Winter World Cup in Qatar.
“I am really grateful that he is [Southgate] talking about me like that in such a positive way, ”said Smith Rowe, per PA.
“But I have to keep working hard, keep my head down and I know the opportunity will present itself. I just have to make sure I’m ready for it.
“It’s always an honor to represent my country at any level. The seniors have a very strong squad right now so I always know it’s going to be tough.
“I just have to keep my head down and stay focused and keep doing what I’m doing and I hope I get this opportunity in the future.”
