An Arizona man wielding a samurai sword was shot dead by police outside a police station earlier this month after he began walking towards officers with the sword raised, officials said Friday. authorities.
The incident happened Sept. 10 in the area of 39th Avenue and Cactus Road near the entrance to the Phoenix Police District Cactus Park employee parking lot, the Phoenix Police Department said. .
Witnesses called 911 and reported that a man pulled a samurai sword from his belt and began banging on the police station fence near the employee gate for several minutes, police said.
When two officers on patrol arrived at the scene, the man walked towards the officers with the sword raised and ignored several orders to drop the sword, authorities said.

Officers then fired shots at the man, hitting him.
The man was later identified as Aaron Baughman, 40. Baughman was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries.
Another man arrived at the scene and approached Baughman. Officers ordered the man to stop and arrested him. It was later determined that he was Baughman’s father.
Police recovered the samurai sword from the scene.

An internal investigation is also underway to determine whether the actions of the officers involved complied with departmental policy and the law.
