Apple is working on a docking station for the iPad that would allow the device to function as a smart display and speaker, according to a report from Bloombergis Mark Gurman. The company reportedly aims to introduce the feature as early as next year, converting the iPad into an Amazon Echo Show-like device that you can set up on a counter or bedside table.
An iPad dock could work the same way, Gurman notes, potentially allowing users to make calls via FaceTime and take hands-free control of smart home devices. The company is also working on other devices in the smart home space, including an updated version of the HomePod which Gurman says could have an updated screen, an S8 chip and multitouch functionality. Last year, Gurman reported that Apple was also planning a combination of Apple TV and camera-equipped smart speakers, which he said is still in the works.
While we’re not expecting the docking station just yet, Apple is set to launch the iPad Pro before the end of this month, which would come with 11-inch and 12.9-inch variants, as well as with Apple’s internal M2 chip. .
