Apple releases new iPhone OS
Apple announced new features on iPhones through iOS 18 and the company’s AI-powered intelligence system called “Apple Intelligence” at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on Monday, including scheduled iMessages, personalization unique interface and emojis.
With iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence arriving later this year, according to Apple CEO Craig Federighi, iPhone users will have access to a smarter, more customizable and more powerful mobile operating system.
“We’re just getting started, I hope you’re as excited as I am about the journey ahead,” Federighi said during Apple’s WWDC keynote.
Here are some of the new features available through iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence.
When is iOS 18 released? What phones can use iOS 18?
Apple has announced that iOS 18 will debut this fall as a free download for iPhone Xs and later.
Improved home screen, control center customization
When iPhone users unlock their devices, they’re usually greeted by a wallpaper and a ton of apps. With iOS 18, users will be able to further customize their Home screen in a variety of ways, including:
- Place app icons and widgets anywhere on the home screen grid.
- Enable iPhone in dark mode, which now changes app icons.
- Change home screen tint color.
The Control Center is also more customizable since iPhone users will be able to group together their favorite controls, including those created by third-party apps. The flashlight and camera shortcuts on the lock screen will also be editable.
Scheduled messages and other tapback reactions coming with iOS 18
The Messages app will benefit from many new features thanks to iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence, Apple executives announced Monday.
Scheduled messages, emoji tapbacks, and text effects were announced as improvements to the Message app. Text effects will allow users to visually amplify their messages, while emoji tapbacks are ways to respond to text messages in a more expressive way.
Rich Communication Services (RCS) is another new edition of Messages available through iOS 18 and the improvement will enable smoother text messaging between iPhone and Android users.
Welcome, ‘Genmojis’
With the help of Apple Intelligence, users will be able to create personalized “Genmoji” to match at any time. All users will have to do is provide a description and a Genmoji will appear, along with other options to choose from. Genmojis can also be added inline in messages.
Another feature available in Messages, courtesy of Apple Intelligence, is the ability for users to create “total original images” of people in sketches and animated shapes. Apple used a contact’s birthday as an example and a custom sketch was created and sent through the Messages app.
“The biggest redesign ever” for Photos
Photos is getting its “biggest overhaul ever” as the app will now be “unified into a single view.”
Filtering options are coming to the app and users will be able to search for photos by month or year taken. Screenshots can also be filtered.
A Collections feature is now included and will allow users to browse customizable sections. A daily updated carousel is another feature that allows users to see their favorite photos in a new format.
Improved and more organized Mail app
The Mail app will be able to separate emails into sections to make users’ inboxes more organized.
Incoming email is divided into:
- Primary for personal and urgent emails
- Transactions for confirmations and receipts
- Updates for news and social notifications
- Promotions for marketing emails and coupons
A new email summary feature will also make it easier to navigate important emails.
Highlights and redesigned player added to Safari
Safari will make it easier to quickly get the gist of articles or web pages by finding key information and summarizing it.
For example, Safari will summarize a long article for users or find the location of a restaurant simply by its name appearing on a web page.
Password app, enhanced privacy
The Passwords app will allow users to more easily store and access their passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords and verification codes. The app will also tell users if their passwords are weak or have been used multiple times.
The iOS 18 update will also help with user privacy by allowing them to hide apps and lock apps where it would require a password or Face ID to open them.
Advanced Siri
Thanks to Apple Intelligence, Siri will be more advanced than ever by being able to:
- Perform actions in apps on behalf of users.
- Answer thousands of questions when users want to know how to do something on their Apple devices.
- Maintain conversational context so users don’t have to repeat things when planning events or sending messages.
- Better understand requests, even if users stumble over the words.
- Take action when something new appears on the screen, like updating a contact when a user receives a text message with a new address.
