Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed Marjorie Taylor Greene on Wednesday, hinting the Georgian MP was trying to take an unearned leave.
“You can just vote ‘no’ instead of trying to get out of work early,” the New York Democratic representative tweeted to Ms. Greene, a Republican who praised the QAnon plot and whose outrageous statements l ‘were dismissed from his duties on the committee.

And you should probably stop using these hashtags because women’s rights include trans women. ✌🏽🏳️⚧️💜 https://t.co/iJzA5BrLZF

Representative Greene had previously boasted on Twitter that she proposed adjourning the House of Representatives rather than voting on the Equality Act, a bill that would ban discrimination in the United States based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
“I just made an adjournment motion to give every member of Congress time to rethink the destruction of #WomensRights and #WomensSports and #ReligiousFreedom before voting for #EqualityAct!” she tweeted Wednesday afternoon.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez responded with her sour tweet, adding, “And you should probably stop using these hashtags because women’s rights include trans women.”
The Equality Act, formally titled HR 5, would codify a 2020 decision of the United States Supreme Court, which ruled that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects gay and transgender Americans discrimination. The court made this decision on the basis of “sex,” an outdated term open to various interpretations, but the equality law would explicitly protect LGBTQ Americans.
Rep Greene called the bill “Disgusting, immoral and evil.”
She and other Republicans argue the bill would undermine federally funded school sports by allowing trans girls to compete with what they call “organic” sports.
“Biological women cannot compete with biological men,” said Representative Greene in an speech Wednesday, bringing up images of “boys” joining his daughter’s softball team.
“They will be in her locker room, they will be in her showers, they will be in her bathroom, they will be in her hotel room when she travels with her team,” she said with anger rising in her voice. “It’s wrong.”
Women’s sports groups have contested this conception. Several organizations, including the Women’s Sports Foundation and the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport, have published a open letter supporting the equality law in 2019.
“The idea that allowing transgender girls to participate in female sports leads to male domination of female sports is based on a misunderstanding of what it means to be transgender and a misrepresentation of non-discrimination laws,” the groups wrote. “Transgender girls are girls and transgender women are women.”
The equality law is expected to pass in the House of Representatives, where Democrats have a majority.
He will then move on to the Senate, where Democrats and Republicans are split evenly, but Vice President Kamala Harris could vote evenly. President Joe Biden strongly supported the bill.
Representative Ocasio-Cortez is confident about the bill’s prospects in the House.
“We’re going to pass the #EqualityAct today, protect our LGBTQ + family and make the world a little better,” she said tweeted. “Nothing is going to stop this.”
