Borna Barisic’s two penalties in the second half helped Rangers beat Royal Antwerp 4-3 in an upside down Europa League first leg in the 32nd first leg.
Joe Aribo’s clever finish put Rangers ahead seven minutes before halftime, but the hosts fought back with two goals late in the first period thanks to a header from Felipe Avenatti and a penalty from Lior Refaelov after Steven Davis was heavily penalized for a foul on the Israeli.
However, Steven Gerrard’s side leveled things off via their own kick – awarded after a review by the video assistant referee, who urged referee Georgi Kabakov to consult the TV monitor – with Barisic converting the penalty. which results just before the hour.
Antwerp were soon back in the lead, thanks to the fine efforts of Martin Hongla, only for the visitors to show a lot of heart to rightly overturn the game late.
First, substitute Ryan Kent equalized with a fine solo goal seven minutes from time, before Barisic kept his cool in the last minute to win it after Abdoulaye Seck was sent off for giving the penalty with deliberate handball.
The return leg will take place in Ibrox next Thursday.
