Anti-border wall Elissa Slotkin opposes the end of border controls

Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), a candidate for re-election in Michigan’s 7th congressional district, now says she opposes ending border controls after criticizing former President Donald Trump for trying secure the US-Mexico border.

In a recent interview, Slotkin said she “cannot support” President Joe Biden’s decision to end Title 42 – the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) public health authority imposed by Trump in 2020 which has helped stem illegal immigration in recent years. two years.

“Right now we don’t have as many people crossing the border as we usually would right now because we have COVID restrictions,” Slotkin said. “As soon as these are lifted in May it will be, again, a series of overwhelmed border crossings and I cannot stand that.”

“I can’t bear to rip the bandage off and not have a plan to stem the blood flow,” she continued.

Yet in 2019, Slotkin blasted Trump’s moves to secure the US-Mexico border with permanent barriers, saying at the time:

Regarding the President’s decision to declare a national emergency to build a border wall: Effective leadership on difficult issues does not come by coercion, it comes by influence. [Emphasis added]

The two sides have united in backing a deal that funds billions of dollars for border security, including additional technology and physical barriers along the border. Our democratic system is one of compromise, and I am deeply concerned by the President’s decision to break with historic precedent and circumvent this system.and using a national emergency declaration as a tool to deliver on a political promise. As Breitbart News reported, Biden officials have admitted they expect up to half a million cross-border commuters and illegal aliens to arrive at the southern border each month through their late Title 42. – the equivalent of the resident population of Mesa, Arizona.

Slotkin has also been a staunch supporter of amnesty for the country’s 11-22 million illegal aliens, co-sponsoring bills like Democrats’ American Dream and Promise Act of 2021 that would have given some eligible illegal aliens the possibility of obtaining green cards.

Slotkin also backed an amnesty for illegal aliens working on American farms.

In the interview, Slotkin said she wants to see “an infusion” of foreign workers taking American jobs because “in Michigan, the farmers, the tourism industry” are looking for a steady stream of workers to hire.

“At the same time that we are desperate to get people to fill so many of our jobs across the country, it means the system is broken and not working for anyone,” Slotkin said.

“It doesn’t work for employers in the United States who are looking for legal, approved labor to hire…you need to have a system that incentivizes coming here to work legally where you can apply and enter from your country of origin for these economic migrants,” she continued.

In February, Slotkin’s Michigan had an unemployment rate of 4.7% with nearly 230,000 Michiganders out of work – many of whom are seeking full-time jobs with competitive wages and good benefits.

Slotkin is facing a re-election challenge from Michigan State Senator Tom Barrett (right), an Iraq War veteran who has pledged support for funding to complete a wall along from the southern border.
