Anthony Joshua reveals Mike Tyson made him believe he could turn his life around and become a boxing success as he explains why he looked up to Iron Mike as an inspiration when he was young

Anthony Joshua has named Mike Tyson as his main sporting inspiration since his youth.

The former two-time unified heavyweight champion looked up to the undisputed ex-king, who remains one of the most famous men in the world to this day.

When asked to name his sports inspiration, AJ told the Behind the BOSS podcast, “A boxing inspiration – you just have to look at them for what they do in the ring.

“We tend to look up to a lot of people for what they do outside of their profession.

“I don’t support a lot of people for what they do in their private lives.

“I like Mike Tyson because he embodied this discipline.

“He struggled a lot growing up – poverty stricken area, mum was all sorts.

“He rose to a certain degree, was in juvenile detention centers when he was 13 years old.

“His criminal record was 50 pages, so if we looked at someone with that kind of information, we would probably say, ‘This person is going to fail in life, they don’t have much going for them.

“But he changed that.

“So for me, it showed me that no matter where you start, as long as you can apply yourself, you never know what the future holds.

“And he just applied himself to boxing – whether it was education, sports, whatever – but boxing was his chosen field and he trained.

“He became an encyclopedia of boxing, he studied the game and he became one of the greatest heavyweight champions, also the youngest heavyweight champion, that there ever was.

“I realized that if he can do it – I’m not going to say I can be as good as he is – but if the plan is there, wake up early, sleep early, work, believe in yourself, be a wild, then you have a chance to do it.

“And with boxing, in three years I walked in the gym and then three years later I became an Olympic champion just by embodying that mentality.

“I just took what I learned from him and that’s why for me he is one of my favorites and an inspiration.”
