Anthony Joshua confirms Angel Fernandez as new head coach and will fight on an interim basis if he has to wait for Oleksandr Usyk rematch

Anthony Joshua has confirmed that Angel Fernandez will be his head coach as he prepares for his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.

Joshua was convincingly beaten by Usyk at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in September and led to speculation he could sack long-serving manager Rob McCracken.

The two-time world heavyweight champion has visited several American trainers, including Eddy Reynoso and Ronnie Shields.

AJ confirmed to Behind The Gloves that Fernandez will be taking on the lead role as he looks to keep things fresh ahead of the rematch.

He said: “I’m working with Angel Fernandez right now. [He’s based] in London and in my camp for three years anyway.

“He’s been to the last three of my world title fights.

When asked if he was going to be the head coach, AJ replied, “Yeah man.”

Joshua gave no indication as to whether McCracken would still be part of his squad, but promoter Eddie Hearn had previously said he would be involved one way or another.

Hearn admitted this week that AJ could have an interim fight before facing Usyk.

The Ukrainian is forced to face the Briton again and this second fight was supposed to take place in May or June.

However, he has now pledged to join Kyiv’s Territorial Defense amid Vladimir Putin’s invasion by Russia.

Joshua wouldn’t talk about Usyk’s current situation or what’s going on in Ukraine, but said he would take an interim fight.

He added: “I will fight anything, no problem.”

When the name Joseph Parker was offered to him, AJ said, “I will fight Joseph Parker. I don’t care, I’ll fight anyone, anytime. I will fight 100%.”
