Anthony Joshua admits Oleksandr Usyk ‘broke his ass’ in first fight but insists he’s ‘the comeback king’ and will bounce back in rematch

Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk have come face to face for the first time since their title fight in September 2021.

The two heavyweights met at their press conference ahead of their rematch, scheduled for August 20.

In the first fight, Usyk masterfully dispatched Joshua to win by unanimous decision. The Briton has been widely criticized for his game plan of trying to dispatch one of the sport’s most technically gifted boxers.

Despite being badly beaten, AJ doesn’t seem to dwell on the loss as he seemed motivated to avenge the loss during the press conference.

“The hunger is still there,” he said. “Like I always said from the start, stay hungry and just keep the motivation high.

“Breakaways happen and things happen in life, but resilience, mental toughness and consistency will always prevail.

“So we’re still on the undisputed path for sure and it’s just a little hiccup but I’m focused on the target.”

Joshua was then prompted by his promoter, Eddie Hearn, to reflect on his previous fight with Usyk and offered a very honest assessment.

“The fight with Usyk, he broke my ass for a few rounds and I have to take that loss like a man, but I hold myself accountable and I’m someone who can admit when I’m wrong and hold my head up when I am right.

“In the September fight I was wrong and he was right and I just have to reverse that on August 20.

“I don’t like to complicate things too much because there is simplicity in genius and sometimes if you keep it simple you can achieve great things. So I’m just going to keep it simple, move on and date will come soon.

“You have to give him and his team credit where credit is due. I’m not a hater, I respect him, his job and what he’s done.

“So that should only motivate me to want to improve. If I’m with someone who is better than me at night or better than me in some aspect, I have to motivate myself and push myself to be better than them. and that’s all it really does.

“What’s great is that I get a second chance. What got me into boxing in the first place, when I was young I struggled a bit from time to time and I I was lucky to have a second chance and I found boxing and took it with both hands.

“So if you know me and my story, you know I’m the comeback king, you can put me down but it’s hard to hold me back.”
