Following Anne Heche’s horrific car accident, which destroyed a house and left the actress with severe burns, there is renewed interest in her relationship with Ellen DeGeneres.
The couple dated from 1997 to 2000 and did not initially go public with their romance.
Their seemingly solid relationship, bolstered by discussions about the possibility of having children together and getting married if the civil unions law were passed in Vermont, came to an unexpected end, according to friends.
A TIMELINE OF ANNE HECHE’S CAR CRASH: HOW STAR’S FIERY CRASH TOOK HER IN A CRITICAL CONDITION
On August 18, 2000, the couple released a joint statement announcing that they were no longer a couple. Just a day after the breakup news broke, Heche displayed bizarre behavior, abandoning his SUV on the road and then walking 1.5 miles to a stranger’s house.
The stranger, who initially let Heche into her home, grew weary as the actress did not plan to return to her car and called the sheriff’s department.
When authorities showed up, the stranger told People Magazine, “Heche told them she was ‘God, and she was going to take everyone back to heaven…in a spaceship.'”
Heche was taken to hospital and released hours later, but continued to struggle for years to come.
In an interview with Page Six, Heche claimed his relationship with DeGeneres made it difficult to find work. She says, “I haven’t done a studio shot for 10 years. I got kicked out of a 10 million dollar contract and I haven’t seen the light of day in a studio shot.”
She went back to work with the film “Six days, seven nights”, with Harrison Ford. And while Heche says no one else wanted to work with her, she credits Ford for asking her to star with him in the film. Heche calls her his hero, revealing that he told her, “Honestly honey, I don’t care who you sleep with.”

Heche and DeGeneres have continued to remain mostly silent about their relationship, with DeGeneres telling the Los Angeles Times just a year after their split, “She walked through the door and I haven’t spoken to her since. I don’t have the answers… I find myself with everyone wondering what happened.”
DeGeneres hasn’t shared any comments since Heche’s car accident, though Heche’s other exes, including James Tupper and Thomas Jane, have shared positive thoughts.
