Ange Postecoglou downplays Tottenham links as Celtic treble-chasing boss focuses on ‘here and now’
Ange Postecoglou has played down links with Tottenham, saying his only aim is to win the treble with Celtic.
The Bhoys boss is one of the names in the north London job as Daniel Levy continues his search for a permanent successor to Antonio Conte.
Postecoglou was a surprise name to be appointed to Parkhead in the summer of 2021 but showed his top-flight credentials with a Premiership and League Cup title to his name in his first season.
That term looks set to get even better after retaining those titles this season, while gearing up for next week’s Scottish Cup final in which the Hoops can secure a prestigious treble.
Attention will very quickly turn to the Australian boss’ future as speculation grows over Tottenham’s job, but Postecoglou was quick to play down the reports.
Discussing the links, he said: “I’ve often been asked about these things, what’s important to me is the here and now. I never planned anything in my football career.
“My ambitions at the moment are to enjoy tomorrow (Saturday), play a good game and then try to win a cup final and make it a special season.
“It’s not every year you get the opportunity to win a treble and if anyone thinks I’m thinking about anything other than that, they don’t know me.”
When asked if he was thinking about his future beyond the end of the season, Postecoglou replied: “No, because I know that’s not how football works.
“As a manager you can’t chart a course for yourself to be in a certain position at a certain time.
“The one thing I know for sure is that if you don’t focus on the task at hand, your destiny slips away from you.
“I’ve worked really hard in my career to not be in that position and the way I’ve done that is to make sure that beyond what’s happening this week I don’t think about anything. ‘other.
“Everything that happens in my career from here will happen because I’m doing very well.
“I think what Celtic fans want is for their manager to focus on what’s important to them now.
“I would hate to think our supporters want me to think about anything other than having a great game tomorrow, having a great day and then winning a cup final to make it a hat-trick, which will make it a special year.”
