Andy Ruiz Jr is ready to fight again

Andy Ruiz Jr will return to the ring to face Chris Arreola on April 24 in his first fight since losing to Anthony Joshua.

Mexico’s first heavyweight world champion posted “we’re back” on social media in reference to his long-awaited return.

Ruiz Jr has rethought his preparation by joining coach Eddy Reynoso who resides in a stable including Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, Ryan Garcia and Oscar Valdez.

He hasn’t been in the ring since December 2019 in Saudi Arabia when he was highlighted in a rematch with Joshua.

Six months earlier he had shockingly stopped Joshua to claim the IBF, WBA and WBO belts, but he later admitted that “partying” meant he was not prepared for a second fight.

39-year-old Ruiz Jr’s next opponent Arreola has won 38 of his 47 fights – he was stopped by Vitali Klitschko and Deontay Wilder.

Joshua won the rematch by unanimous decision

Arreola has already said Sky Sports: “It’s the only fight [for me] it is very attractive not only to me but also to boxing fans. I think boxing fans will love a boxing fight with two Mexican heavyweights tackling it.

“We’re both Californians, we’re both in the standings, we’re both fan-friendly fighters and we’re both of Mexican descent.

“We all know what Mexican fighters bring to the table. They bring continuous excitement. We just introduced ourselves and we love to fight.

“I think it’s going to be a big fight between me and Andy.”

Jorge Capetillo, a coach who recently worked with Ruiz Jr, said Sky Sports: “He’s hungry again. He’s had a taste of what it means to be world champion. I see he wants more!”
