Andy Ruiz Jr bizarre, unexpected next fight announced for Triller PPV against Tyrone Spong as former foe of Anthony Joshua no longer boxing on same platform as Deontay Wilder

Andy Ruiz Jr is set to fight Tyrone Spong in an unexpected heavyweight clash on July 16 in Mexico City, Mexico.

The fight will headline a Triller PPV show in North America, although the prize is yet to be confirmed.

Former world heavyweight champion Ruiz Jr shocked the world in 2019 when he knocked out Anthony Joshua to dethrone his world heavyweight titles.

However, just six months later, AJ snatched the belts in the immediate rematch.

Since then, Ruiz Jr has only fought once.

He took 18 months out of the ring and then returned with new trainer Eddy Reynoso against Chris Arreola in May 2021.

Ruiz Jr was floored by Arreola in this contest but got up and eventually won on points.

Ruiz Jr was hoping to build on that momentum and get back in the ring quickly, but that turned out not to be the case.

Instead, in August, Ruiz Jr underwent surgery on his right knee to deal with long-standing issues he had been struggling with for three years.

As a result, he hasn’t fought since the Arreola fight and had nothing planned so far.

On July 16, he will fight Spong – who is best known for facing Oleksandr Usyk in 2019, but tested positive for a banned substance and ruled out.

Spong’s announcement came as a surprise though as it takes Ruiz Jr to Triller and away from Al Haymon’s PBC.

There had been talk of pitting him against Luis Ortiz this summer and speculation that the winner of that fight could be compared to Deontay Wilder, should he decide to return.

However, Ruiz Jr is now heading to another platform, which makes all of this less likely at this time.
