‘An intense battle’: who will win Liverpool vs City 2.0?

Liverpool are dreaming of a quadruple and Manchester City are aiming for a hat-trick.

Something has to give when England’s top two sides meet in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday.

Their 2-2 draw last weekend didn’t move much in the Premier League title race, with City maintaining a one-point lead. It will be a different story at Wembley Stadium.

“It’s a really intense fight at a very high level,” said Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp.

“City were really strong last week and we weren’t at our best. So I would also like to see a game where we are at our best.

Liverpool won the League Cup in February by beating Chelsea on penalties after 120 minutes of scoreless play also at Wembley.

The Reds and City have also qualified for the Champions League semi-finals and could meet in the final next month in Paris.

Liverpool advanced 6-4 on aggregate after a 3-3 draw at Anfield. City overtook Atletico Madrid this week but midfielder Kevin de Bruyne and defender Kyle Walker picked up injuries in the 0-0 draw to put Pep Guardiola’s men ahead 1-0 at the total.

No Premier League club has ever won all four trophies in the same season. Liverpool haven’t won the FA Cup since 2006, while City claimed victory in 2019 by completing the domestic treble.

In Sunday’s second semi-final, Romelu Lukaku could return for Chelsea when they face fellow Londoners Crystal Palace – also at Wembley. The Belgian striker has missed the last two games due to a leg injury.

“Romelu was back in training yesterday,” Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said on Friday.

“Let’s see if he has a reaction or not.”

Palace are the only remaining team to have never won the FA Cup.

22-year-old midfielder Conor Gallagher will have to sit out as he is on loan from Chelsea, who have rejected Palace’s formal request to allow him to play.

The cup would be a consolation for a Blues side who were knocked out of the Champions League this week, ending their title defense. They last won the FA Cup in 2018.
