MOBILE, Alabama (AP) – An apartment complex in Alabama was visited by an unusual guest as children returned from school Monday afternoon: an alligator that crawled out of a storm sewer.
Kenisha Miller and her boyfriend, Anthony Patterson, told WKRG-TV they were driving home when they pulled over to do a double take in an area of downtown Mobile.
“We saw an alligator come out of the drainage hole, and I was like, ‘Is this really an alligator?’ Miller said.
The couple attempted to get police and wildlife officials to the scene quickly as the reptile made its way towards the complex.
A school bus dropped children within 15.2 meters (50 feet) on the street. Miller and Patterson said other people were initially unaware of the alligator.
But a crowd quickly formed, with locals trying to record the surprising scene.
“They were just as shocked as we are,” Patterson said. “Never (seen) anything like it, in the hood anyway.”
Wildlife officers safely captured the alligator and took it away.
