American Idol alum Clay Aiken runs for Congress again in North Carolina

Old American Idol Candidate Clay Aiken is running for Congress again, tossing his hat in the ring as a Democrat for the proposed 6th District in North Carolina, which is expected to be heavily left-wing.

Clay Aiken, who aims to succeed retired representative David Price (D-NC), announced his offer Monday in a video posted to his social media accounts. In the video, he pledges to promote progressive values, including tackling “systemic racism”, ending “gun violence” and tackling “climate change”.

He also attacked Republican members of Congress, calling Representative Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) a “white nationalist”.

Aiken, who is openly gay, downplayed his personality and introduced himself as an ordinary citizen.

“These days my life is a lot more like yours than Justin Bieber’s,” he said. “But one thing that has never changed is how much I love my home country.”

Aiken said progressives had lost ground in North Carolina in recent years, citing “voter suppression” and “fanatic” transgender toilet laws. In the video, he also quoted prominent GOP parliamentarians, Representative Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-GA) and Lauren Boebert (R-CO).

“As Democrats we have to improve ourselves at speaking and using our voices because these people are not going to calm down anytime soon,” he said.

He described progressive Democrats as “balanced, open-minded and compassionate.”

Aiken first ran for Congress in 2014, but was defeated in the general election by Republican Renee Ellmers. His unsuccessful run spawned a series of docu-reality that prompted some of his donors to say they felt duped.
