Amadou Onana makes his debut on Everton’s roller coaster and Lucas Digne scores his own goal, but ‘selfless’ Ollie Watkins helps Steven Gerrard get the better of Frank Lampard in thrilling Aston Villa win

Amadou Onana had an Everton debut to remember for good and bad reasons as Aston Villa beat the Toffees 2-1 on Saturday.

After Danny Ings put the hosts ahead in the first half, Everton’s new £33million signing from Lille came on nine minutes from time and changed the game in favor of both teams .

Onana conceded the ball to Emi Buendia to score in the 86th minute, seemingly putting the game to bed.

However, the Belgian midfielder immediately atoned for his mistake and excellent work in the box prompted an own goal for none other than former Everton defender Lucas Digne.

And Onana, despite being on the pitch for nine minutes, nearly equalized in the dying moments but was denied by a superb tackle from Calum Chambers.

Speaking on a commentary for talkSPORT, former England winger Trevor Sinclair said: “I was impressed with Onana.

“He came off the bench, made the mistake for Villa’s goal, but then showed very good character to get up, run down the other end and create a goal for Everton. He looks like a very good signing.

Sinclair added: “Onana is going to be a problem in the Premier League, he had a really big impact.

“I was really impressed with his reaction, he took the ball, pushed down the left, twisted the defender, put the ball through the box and scored a goal.

“That tells me he has an incredible character. He’s going to be a problem.

Onana’s cameo meant Villa boss Steven Gerrard was forced to sweat for the final moments as Everton squandered a number of big chances but eventually got one over famous opponent Frank Lampard.

Everton are now without a point since their opening two games amid questions over their firepower up front, while Villa are bouncing back from their opening day loss at Bournemouth.

Ollie Watkins didn’t start at Vitality Stadium but provided both assists at Villa Park, while Tyrone Mings also proved a point on his return to the side after losing the captaincy.

Sinclair said: “Ironically, I think it’s both Watkins and Mings that I’m mentioning as man of the match.

“If it hadn’t been for that late Everton goal, Mings would have been a big part of the reason Villa could have kept a clean sheet.

“The two players Gerrard dropped last week showed a fantastic attitude, they were there to prove why they deserved a place in the team, and they both succeeded.

“Watkins is the start of the show in this Aston Villa team, for me he just needs to work to polish his skill with his finishing then he would have it all.”
