Samsung took two months to bring One UI 6.1 to older devices after launching the latest version of One UI on the Galaxy S24 series earlier this year. Once the rollout began, Samsung only included flagship phones and tablets launching in 2023 in the first phase.
The second phase finally began a few days ago, with Samsung beginning the rollout of the One UI 6.1 update to the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy Z Fold 4, and Galaxy Z Flip 4 in South Korea. Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra owners in Korea experienced issues accessing their phones after installing the update, forcing Samsung to pause the rollout. Some units would fail to boot, or if they boot and go to the lock screen, they fail to unlock.
Such issues are not uncommon with major software updates, and while users of 2023 Galaxy phones and tablets who received One UI 6.1 have had no issues, it appears others have. not so lucky. This may also be one of the reasons why Samsung did not extend the availability of the update for pre-2023 devices outside of Korea several days after the initial release.
Considering the aforementioned issues, anyone with a Galaxy phone or tablet eligible for One UI 6.1 should follow a few steps before installing the update.
First step before installing One UI 6.1: Make a data backup
Doing a data backup is a good idea before any major operating system update, but even if it’s not something you do, you should make an exception when you install One UI 6.1. Disable screen lock/bypass lock screen
These days, it’s virtually impossible to find people who don’t lock their phone with a password, PIN, or fingerprint. But since one of the problems after installing One UI 6.1 is not being able to unlock the device, you may want to disable the lock screen before updating.
You can change the screen lock type from the Settings » Security & privacy » Lock screen » Screen lock menu on your phone or tablet. Selection of None screen lock type will disable lock screen and boot your phone directly to home screen.
Removing the screen lock will remove all saved fingerprints, patterns, and PINs that you use, but we think this is a minor inconvenience that you should ignore. You can re-register and create them again once One UI 6.1 is installed and your phone has booted safely.
