Alabama GOP launches GoFundMe for Alabama veterans captured in Ukraine

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WHNT) – The Alabama Republican Party is raising money for the families of Alex Druke and Andy Huynh.

The two Alabama veterans traveled to Ukraine to help fight Russia and were captured in June of this year.

The men have since returned to Alabama after being released in September. Although their story has made waves across the country, the financial burden to bring the men back has not.

Family members are still working to pay the bills for transportation costs from the US Embassy in Riyadh.

ALGOP has launched a GoFundMe to go directly to families. Party donors plan to match all funds raised to reach the target amount of $5,000.

“All those fees to get home, which was quite expensive. There were several flights across Europe, last minute accommodation. Just the logistics of getting them from Saudi Arabia here to Alabama. So a lot of things went there. Lots of fast and last minute tickets. These expenses add up,” said ALGOP President John Wahl.

The money will go directly to Dianna Shaw, Drueke’s aunt, who put all the expenses to get the two men home on her credit card. If you want to contribute, go here.
