Airdrieonians will not take any further action regarding an alleged racist comment directed against their player Rico Quitongo due to insufficient evidence.
Quitongo, a 22-year-old defender, alleged he was the victim of racist abuse by one of Airdrie’s own supporters in a 0-0 draw against Queen’s Park in September.
However, following the result of an investigation by the Scottish side of Ligue 1, the employers in Quitongo will not go further.
A statement posted on the club’s website read: “Airdrieonians FC have fully investigated the alleged racist remark against our player Rico Quitongo and concluded that there was insufficient evidence to take further action .
“Starting from the fact that we have no more than one witness, an unidentifiable and indistinguishable alleged perpetrator, we have now exhausted all possible options.
“We will continue as a club, alongside all of Scottish football, to have a zero tolerance approach to racism.
“It was an important process for all concerned to ensure that if an Airdrieonians FC supporter made this alleged remark, that it was dealt with by the appropriate authorities.
“It was also important to ensure that our club and our supporters as a whole were not unfairly accused of using racist language. We believe this process has been a justification.
“Everyone involved at Airdrieonians will continue to be vigilant and work together to ensure that all forms of abuse towards our professional football players and management are eradicated as there is simply no room for this in our club. “
