Maria Shriver opened up about her healing journey after her divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger, and that involved visiting a convent.

After her breakup with former California governor Schwarzenegger, the 67-year-old journalist revealed that she began to feel like she “had freedom or permission” to kiss.

“I was like, ‘Oh, I better go figure out, what’s the truth? ‘” Shriver said during an appearance on the ‘Making Space with Hoda Kotb’ podcast on Monday.

In her mission to seek “the truth”, Shriver confessed that she went to a convent.

“I went to a nunnery, a cloistered nunnery, and to be in silence and to seek guidance…The Reverend Mother told me…“I think you came here to ask permission,” she shared .

Shriver went on to detail his experience and pointed out that his visit was similar to “a scene from ‘The Sound of Music'”.

During her conversation with the Reverend Mother, she told Shriver, “You can’t come live here, but you have permission to go out and be Maria.”

After being overcome with emotion, Shriver admitted that she broke down in tears and was “sobbing”.

“I was like, ‘Who is that?'” Shriver wondered.

She said in the middle of her illuminating conversation, Shriver noted that she felt she had “never given [herself] permission to feel, to be vulnerable, to be weak, to be brought to your knees, and the world did that to me.”

On Shriver’s journey to self-discovery, she was determined to take the next step after parting ways with Schwarzenegger.

“Then I was like, ‘Okay, God, let’s go. I’m going to take this and learn everything I can about my role and what I need to learn.'”

She added that during difficult times, when “the universe hits you [down]“, Shriver decided to focus on what she learned from the experience of her divorce.

“I gave myself permission to start learning.”

Shriver and Schwarzenegger, 75, called it quits in 2011 after 25 years of marriage, citing “irreconcilable differences.”

The two filed for divorce after Shriver discovered her ex-husband had secretly fathered a child with family housekeeper Mildred Baena in 1996.

After Schwarzenegger’s infidelity became public knowledge, the ‘The Terminator’ actor confessed to several affairs with other women.

In his memoir, “Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story,” Schwarzenegger detailed his double life, revealing he had an affair with another actress while married to Shriver amid their public scandal.

Schwarzenegger also has a fifth child with Baena, named Joseph, who is a fitness fanatic and actor like his father.
