After 94 years, a local hardware store is about to close

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Lewter Hardware opened its doors in downtown Huntsville in 1928. After more than 90 years of serving the community, the family-owned business will close its doors on October 8.

Lewter Hardware has been passed down through four generations of Lewters resulting in a long local history.

“We’ve seen people come with their grandparents and parents, and they’re bringing their kids,” said Lewter Hardware manager Caleb Hipp. “Plus, a lot of new faces with all the new growth we’ve had here. It’s just that it’s really neat to see on all levels, the generational stories that come through and the generational buyer that we have.

Recently, Lewter staff posted a sign on the door telling customers that following the untimely death of store owner Donnie Lewder, the best option moving forward is to close the store.

“I was shocked when I came today and saw the sign,” customer Lorri Doss said. “I was aware of Mr. Lewter’s passing, but they will certainly be missed. It’s just a landmark in Huntsville, Alabama.

Longtime customers have said Lewter’s staff always have a friendly word for you.

“It’s just a family atmosphere, you come here, you know everyone,” Doss said. “You can find everything.”

Friendly staff brought back many customers week after week.

“I moved here in 1982 or 1983, and I’ve been coming here once or twice a week every week since,” customer Charles Money said.

When the store closed, customers said they would not find another store like Lewter Hardware.

“It makes me sad to see another landmark fall,” Doss said. “Just a big family. We will miss it very much.”

The hardware store sells everything from gardening tools to paint to household and plumbing supplies, and customers said they keep stopping in for the quality products and quality conversation.
