Mumbai City FC narrowly lost to Al Jazira FC of the United Arab Emirates 1-0, in the 2021-2022 AFC Champions League group stage match at King Fahd International Stadium, Riyadh , in Saudi Arabia, on Thursday. It was a tight game from the start with Mumbai coming close to scoring a few times.
But it was Ali Mabkhout’s 40th-minute penalty that helped the UAE-based club to a victory. This means Mumbai have now fallen to the bottom position in Group B with just three points. They’ve lost two and won one so far. Even Al Jazeera has a similar record, but after the win they dropped to third place.
On the other hand, Saudi football team Al-Shabab leads the group with seven points, while Iraqi Air Force Club is second with four points. Early in the game, it was Al Jazira who attacked the Mumbai post, but the latter managed to keep a goal clear. Throughout the first half, Al Jazeera continued to attack, especially from the right flank.
In fact, in the 34th minute as well, they almost scored, but the ball hit the post. Later, Mumbai showed aggression after being down 1-0 but all their efforts were in vain. However, their best chance came in the 59th minute, when a failed clearance from Lallianzuala Changte put in a long cross for Mourtada Fall, who managed to head the ball, but wide.
Mumbai City FC will play Al Jazeera again on April 18 at the same venue.
