“She’s going to be in pain,” the doctor adds, before tearfully telling the parents that a decision will have to be made about terminating the pregnancy – a choice “only one person can make.”
“And that person is Greg,” the doctor explains, revealing a portrait of Abbott.

The political action committee Mothers Against Greg Abbott released another ad earlier this month criticizing Texas’ policies on guns, the pandemic and education. The group says it includes mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts and grandparents who are “ready to fight” for change in their condition.

The abortion ad mixes distress and dark humor, positing that reproductive health choices in Texas now belong to the state, leaving expectant parents completely confused.
“Greed? says the woman in the ad. Who is Greg?! his partner asks, using a slightly more profane twist when the doctor tells them that only Greg can decide the next steps.
Afterwards, the doctor, brandishing a red telephone with a direct line to Abbott, has a brief conversation with the governor. With a shrug, the doctor says to the parents, “Yeah, I’m fine. be a no. Good luck to you.”
The ad ends with a close-up of the stunned couple and a question splashed across the screen: “Whose should it belong to?”
Although sardonic in essence, the scene depicted in the ad resonated with some doctors. OB/GYN and New York Times contributor Jennifer Gunter posted while sharing the video that she once called a state legislator to get permission to perform an abortion in the 1990s.
“It’s not a hypothetical people,” she added.

Since its release, some candidates have cited the ad to persuade Texans to vote for Democrats who support abortion rights. Beto O’Rourkewho is running against Abbott in what polls suggest is an increasingly tight gubernatorial race, says he will “fight for the women of Texas to have the freedom to decide what is best for their health , their family and their future.
Still, others called the video “poorly executed,” including one woman who was diagnosed as terminally ill while pregnant but chose to carry to term. “I wonder if whoever wrote it has ever had a fatal diagnosis. And if they did, was their doctor just as insensitive? the woman shared on Twitter.
In response, Chelsea Aldrichthe director of the video, said the clip was based on “the true story of another real mother who chose to end”.
“This is not a judgment on a woman’s choice. This is a referendum on lack of choice,” Aldrich wrote.
