Anne Heche remained hospitalized, on a ventilator to help her breathe and underwent surgery on Tuesday, four days after the actor was injured in a violent car accident.
On August 5, Heche’s car crashed into a house in the Mar Vista neighborhood, west of Los Angeles. Flames erupted and Heche, who was alone in the car, was pulled by firefighters from the vehicle embedded in the house. It took nearly 60 firefighters more than an hour to douse the flames, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
“Shortly after the accident, Anne lost consciousness, fell into a coma and is in critical condition,” spokeswoman Heather Duffy Boylston said in an email to The Associated Press. “She has a significant lung injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns requiring surgery.”
Heche’s manager, Michael McConnell, told USA TODAY on Monday that Heche was in “extremely critical condition.”
“She is in a coma and has not regained consciousness since shortly after the accident,” McConnell said.
Heche is being investigated for drugs and/or alcohol to determine if either was a factor in the car accident. A warrant was issued Friday by the Los Angeles Police Department to perform a toxicology blood test on Heche, 53, Officer Annie Hernandez told USA TODAY on Monday.
“The investigation is ongoing based on the findings,” Hernandez added.

Anne Heche spoke about the “bad days” in a podcast episode published a day before the car accident
Heche detailed having a bad day at Duffy on their “Better Together” podcast, released the day before the accident. The episode was taped on Tuesday, several days before it aired, podcast company Straw Hut Media told USA TODAY.
The episode titled “Just the 2022 of Us” was removed from streaming services after the crash due to “inaccurate reports that the episode was recorded on the day of the crash,” said Ryan Tillotson, a representative for Straw Hut Media. It is still posted on the Straw Hut website.
On the podcast, Heche said she had “a very unique day.”

“I don’t know what happened, sometimes the days suck, and I don’t know if you ever have any. … Some days aren’t good very bad days. And I don’t know why some days end like that, and things don’t really rock me that way.”
Heche and Duffy were drinking during the podcast, sharing that they “each have a bottle (of vodka) in front of us.”
