Abu Dhabi Open 2023 | Sania Mirza eliminated in the first round
On Monday, Indian Sania Mirza and American Bethanie Mattek-Sands were eliminated from the Abu Dhabi Open 2023 WTA 500 tennis competition. In the first round, Kirsten Flipkens and Laura Siegemund of Belgium defeated Sania Mirza and Bethanie Mattek-Sands by a score of 3-6, 4-6.
Six-time Grand Slam champion Sania Mirza is set to retire following the setback. After the Dubai Tennis Championships, which start on February 27, the Indian tennis star has declared his retirement from the game.
Sania Mirza and Mattek-Sands suffered a backhand in the second match of the first set as they faced off on the hard courts at Zayed Sports City International Tennis Center. In the very next match, the Indo-American team fought back to break Flipkens and Siegemund’s serve.
Team Europe quickly took the lead, as Sania and Sands were broken once again in game six, and they continued to play hard to win the first set. Both teams fought hard for dominance in the second set. The two teams traded three break chances, and the score was tied at four apiece until Sania and Sands missed serve in the crucial ninth game.
Kirsten Flipkens and Laura Siegemund kept their composure to win the match in just over an hour by serving in game ten.
