Left-leaning media figures are melting in response to Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., and other Republican governors who have passed abortion-banning legislation in recent weeks.

MSNBC anchor Joy Reid and SiriusXM radio host Dean Obeidallah posted several lopsided tweets about the signing of these bills, spinning conspiracy theories that the GOP is trying to install “RELIGIOUS TYRANNY.”

After DeSantis signed a 15-week abortion ban on Thursday, alarm bells started ringing for some in the media. DeSantis’ new law is the latest in a series of what the left has called “strict” abortion restrictions being passed in Republican states.

In Oklahoma, for example, Governor Kevin Stitt on Tuesday signed into law a bill that makes abortion illegal in the state except to save the life of the mother.

In response to such developments, MSNBC’s The Reid Out host Joy Reid angrily tweeted that these bills are about the oppression of women.

She likened Republican leaders to villains in The Handmaid’s Tale who treat women like cattle for breeding, referencing several characters from the dystopian series based on Margaret Atwood’s book: “It’s a bunch of ‘commanders’ , seeking a nation of servants, Marthas, Aunties, silent wives and whores – the only categories allowed for women in Gilead.”

Reid concluded the tweet with, “This is pure religious extremism. And you ladies and your daughters, sisters and friends are on the menu. Wake up.”

In another tweet, Reid claimed pro-lifers aren’t signing these bills because they want to protect children. “Republican leaders in these states don’t care about children. They care about weeding out far-right Christian voters, to stay in power. And they certainly don’t care about women,” she said. affirmed.

Dean Obeidallah, radio host and MSNBC contributor, made similar remarks in his Twitter rant. The man who compared the GOP to the ‘Taliban’ before tweeted, “GOP passes nationwide laws to end abortion based on GOP religious beliefs. Why don’t Democrats call not that for what it is: RELIGIOUS TYRANNY.”

He also made a new comparison between the GOP and the Taliban: “Making laws to FORCE us to follow their religion is truly the very definition of UnAmerican. That’s what the Taliban do.

In another post, Obeidallah asked, “Where is the OUTRAGE of Democratic leaders in response to the fact that the GOP passed abortion laws that LITERALLY impose the GOP’s religious beliefs as the law of the land. The GOP establishes their religion as the law of America. This is as un-American as it gets! #ReligiousFascism.”

Salon writer Amanda Marcotte denounced the fact that Governor DeSantis signed the Florida bill with his daughters there:

“The way Republicans use children as props in anti-choice propaganda is particularly crude. It really highlights how much they objectify children, wanting them to be pretty little dolls forever, instead of valuing adults. they will become.”

She continued, “It’s these kids he’s trying to steal the future from, after all, by banning the reproductive health care they’ll need as they grow into teenagers and adults.”
