“American Idol” fans: Tonight is the big night, when finalists Abi Carter, Jack Blocker and Will Moseley will give it their all on stage for a chance to win the coveted title. The traditional “hometown visits” with the contestants will be a big part of the finale, and The Desert Sun was there for all the festivities surrounding Indio native Abi Carter’s homecoming last week. Follow our report tonight from the field in Indio as the entire Coachella Valley cheers on Abi in her quest for the title.
Abi Carter on winning ‘American Idol’: ‘It’s my dream’
“American Idol” season 22 winner Abi Carter shared some thoughts on Instagram about her climactic moment.
“HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE!??!?!?!? I couldn’t have imagined winning #americanidol when I started this whole journey,” Carter wrote. “We haven’t had a winning girl in over 4 years and to be the first after so many seasons is the greatest honor.”
The last female winner of “American Idol” was Just Sam (Samantha Diaz) in season 18 (2020).
“I’m just a girl from Indio, singing on street corners, and now I’ve had the pleasure and privilege of working with some of the most talented people in the industry and being heard by million people,” the message continued. “This is my dream and I know it’s just the beginning. I love you all so much.”
The City of Indio and Others Celebrate Abi Carter’s ‘American Idol’ Win
Organizations across the Coachella Valley shared congratulatory messages to Carter on social media, including the City of Indio, Palm Springs VillageFest and the University of California Riverside Palm Desert Campus.

Indio is already known as the “City of Festivals,” but now it can also add “City of the Latest American Idol Winner” to its resume.
“She was made for this,” reads a post on “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest’s Instagram. The post included photos of Carter hugging judge Richie and wiping away tears while Seacrest showed off the winning envelope in his hand.

The entire arena erupted in applause once Carter’s name was read out by host Ryan Seacrest. As she fell to her knees, tears streaming down her face, the judges looked on with emotion at their extraordinary new singer.
Returning to the song that began his “Idol” journey, Carter sang “What Was I Made For?” to close the show. Then her classmates and family members came to her side to hug her.
Carter began her “American Idol” run with the judges saying they were looking for the next winner, and that came true Sunday night.
“What are you made for?” Perry asked Carter during his audition. “You’re made for this, 100%.”
In the final moments of the series, Perry was seen wiping away tears and being consoled by Lionel Richie as she also bid farewell to her “Idol” journey as a judge.
Will Moseley was named second, while Jack Blocker won third place in the competition series.
American Idol Finalist Abi Carter Ends Her Journey With New Single “This Is’t Over”
For her latest song “American Idol,” the Indio native sang her latest single, “This Isn’t Over.”
The singer was clearly emotional during the song, trying to hold back tears as she sang high notes. Once she finished, she let them flow as the audience chanted “Abi! Abi! Abi!”
The judges were left speechless.
Carter’s song tells a story of personal growth, becoming a stronger person, and wanting to tell your younger self that it’s not over, even if it seems impossible to go on. It also sends a message to the young singer’s fans that whatever happens on Sunday, Carter is only just beginning her music career.
This is the second song Carter released during her time on the competition series. Her first single, “It’s All Love”, was released on March 29.

“American Idol” runner-up Abi Carter and the remaining Top 12 ladies honored judge Katy Perry, who was wrapping up her show stint on Sunday, with a medley of her songs.
The contestants sang “Teenage Dream,” “Dark Horse,” and “California Gurls.”
Perry was shown munching on pizza, dancing and throwing beach balls to the audience. At the end, she climbed onto the judges’ table and showed off her muscles.

Judge Katy Perry shines in her own right, but her outfit during Sunday’s finale made her shine like “fireworks.”
The “California Gurls” singer wore a gold metallic corset with roses, which looked great on her, but made us wonder if it was comfortable to wear during the show. The dress also featured a long white skirt.
Fantasia Barrino, Jason Mraz and more took the ‘Idol’ stage during the finale
The “American Idol” finale was full of celebrity guests.
Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino returned to her “Idol” roots on Sunday. She told the Top 3 to keep going and never let closed doors stand in their way.
“This show opens doors,” she added. Barrino would later return to the show for a performance.
Singer Jason Mraz and “Idol” contestant Julia Gagnon then took the stage together to sing Mraz’s hit “I Feel Like Dancing.” Gagnon finished in the Top 7 this season.
Seal also celebrated the 30th anniversary of his song “Crazy” with Top 12 contestant Jayna Elise.
Others who took the stage included James Bay, New Kids on the Block, Hootie & the Blowfish, Wynonna and the three “Idol” judges.
American Idol Finalist Abi Carter Dedicates ‘Somewhere’ to Indio
For his second song, Carter chose “Somewhere” from “West Side Story” as a dedication to Indio.
Draped in a light blue ensemble, Carter sang the moving song and savored every moment.
Once again, the judges gave him a standing ovation and let the crowd applaud. Lionel Richie said “it was a stunning moment” and “there’s nothing better than that”. Katy Perry compared Carter to the Statue of Liberty and added that if Carter wins the show, the bar will be very high.
Moments from Carter’s visit to his hometown were also shown during the segment, including visiting the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, being welcomed by students at the George Washington Charter School in Palm Desert, and the end of his day at his parade and concert in downtown Indio.

Indio native Abi Carter covered Bon Jovi’s hit “Bed of Roses” during her Top 3 performance Sunday night.
Seated at the piano and dressed in a black and white blazer and white pants, Carter asked the audience to turn on their iPhone lights and wave them back and forth. As she sustained long notes, the crowd could be heard cheering.
During his mentor meeting, Bon Jovi told Carter that her rendition of the song was “beautiful,” but that he wanted her to make it his own.
“I’m getting chills now,” Bon Jovi said while polishing the song.
After his performance, the judges all stood and applauded Carter. Luke Bryan had to wait a while before he could talk to him because of all the cheering.
“Well, I think they say so. It was great,” he said. “I think the room is saying what it feels.”
Carter said she was “incredibly grateful” upon hearing the applause.
Then she received the surprise of her life: Grammy Award winner Billie Eilish sent a video message, expressing her support for the Indian singer.
“I love you so much. I wish you nothing but the best, and I can’t wait to see what happens tonight,” Eilish said. “I’m here to support you forever.”
