Aaron Rodgers negotiates record deal with Packers

The Packers are preparing for a future in which Aaron Rodgers will be their quarterback. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport ( by Twitter), the organization and representatives of Rodgers have been working on a new contract if the QB remains in Green Bay.

Specifically, the two sides are eyeing a short-term deal that would make Rodgers the highest-paid player in the NFL on a yearly basis. Patrick Mahomes currently leads the NFL with an AAV of $45 million. Rodgers ranks seventh with $33.5 million.

“Nothing is done, but they are having discussions”, Rapoport said (via Michael Baca of NFL.com).
“They have negotiations to have a deal, hopefully for them, ready to go if and when Aaron Rodgers decides firmly and ultimately he wants to come back.”

There are some similarities here to 2018, when the Packers had to strike a record deal to keep Rodgers with the Packers. We heard recently that Rodgers was looking for a contract that would pay him $50 million per season, although the QB was quick to dismiss those rumours. While that would be a monster number and represent a seismic increase in quarterback salaries over the past two years, Rodgers is now negotiating with back-to-back MVPs on his resume.

Of course, there is still an obvious wrinkle that interferes with the negotiations. Rodgers did not inform the Packers that he wanted to stay in Green Bay, and several teams reportedly sent trade offers to the Packers. Rodgers intends to inform the pack of his decision soon.
