A Tottenham fan flinched as Chelsea captain John Terry faced him off at White Hart Lane amid fierce rivalry between the pitch and the stands

The rivalry between Tottenham and Chelsea is undoubtedly one of the fiercest in London, and extra spice should be added when Spurs boss Antonio Conte visits Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Conte is out for revenge after losing every game against his former club last season and the Italian brings a much improved squad to challenge the Blues.

Can Conte be the manager to hand Spurs a first trophy since Juande Ramos in 2008?

The Italian will be well aware of the hatred between the teams who took control of Chelsea just months after the infamous ‘Battle of the Bridge’ in which Chelsea handed Leicester the Premier League title by holding Spurs to a game draw 2-2.

At the time, foreign Chelsea players such as Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard spoke of their dislike of their opponents in white, showing how intense the rivalry was both on the pitch and in the stands.

Rarely, however, do the two overlap, other than when John Terry is involved.

At the start of 2015, Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea were embroiled in an intense title battle with Manuel Pellegrini’s Manchester City and equalized on points on New Year’s Day.

In what was widely considered the game of the season, Spurs won 5-3 at White Hart Lane, undermining Chelsea’s title hopes with a brace from Harry Kane midway through the goal celebration.

Chelsea were playing their first season in 14 years without legendary midfielder Frank Lampard, who joined New York City FC before being loaned to Man City.

But they had another icon to call on, in the form of Terry, who managed to put one on Spurs fans.

The Blues captain went to collect the ball for a throw-in in the loss, and was unable to collect it from a mocking section of Spurs fans.

When Terry finally got the ball back, he responded by pretending to throw the ball at a fan, who flinched in reaction.

Chelsea ran out of losers that day but eventually comfortably won the title four months later.

Terry’s relationship with Spurs fans didn’t improve either.
