A man charged with throwing a dog off a bridge at Spartanburg Co.

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – A man was arrested Monday for throwing a dog twice from a bridge in Spartanburg County.

Spartanburg County Environmental Officers responded to Highway 11 in the Fingerville area in reference to animal cruelty.

Officers learned that a man was throwing a dog over the bridge.

While searching the area, officers found a man holding a dog in a chokehold. Officers identified the man as Shannon Lee Cantrell, 43.

Cantrell told officers that “witches” told him to throw his one-year-old dog off the bridge.

The dog was thrown twice a measured distance of 34 feet from the deck to the ground according to investigators.

Cantrell was charged with animal abuse and taken to the Spartanburg County Detention Center by the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Cantrell ceded ownership of his dog to Spartanburg County.

Deputies said the animal showed no visible signs of injury but was clearly shaken by the incident.

The dog was transported to Greenville County Animal Care for evaluation.
