‘A liquidation?’ John Terry and Cesc Fabregas definitely disagree with Neil Warnock that Cesar Azpilicueta is not a good defender

John Terry and Cesc Fabregas have responded with bewilderment to Neil Warnock’s claim that Cesar Azpilicueta is ‘not a great defender’.

The Boro manager went against popular opinion when he joined talkSPORT and expressed his belief that Chelsea captain Azpilicueta earning so much was more a matter of luck.

The skipper had been widely praised for his performance in the Club World Cup final, with a shrewd bluff allowing Kai Havertz to score and lift the Chelsea trophy for the first time.

Azpilicueta has been at Stamford Bridge for just under a decade and won it all in unique fashion.

His performances in a Chelsea shirt saw the 32-year-old club captain appointed in 2019, succeeding Gary Cahill who replaced club legend John Terry two years earlier.

Azpilicueta has now won three trophies with the armband and was singled out for individual praise for his leadership in the 2-1 final victory over Palmeiras in Abu Dhabi.

One man wasn’t too impressed, however, and that was Warnock, a very experienced promotions expert.

The 73-year-old has faced the Spaniard four times as manager, losing all four games to Chelsea while managing Cardiff, Crystal Palace and Leeds.

Warnock was once livid when a fringe call on Azpilicueta helped relegate his side from Cardiff

Azpilicueta even scored against Warnock’s Cardiff in a spectacular late comeback in 2019 which relegated the Welsh side as well, leaving Warnock furious on the pitch.

“I think he was a very lucky boy to be at a club like Chelsea,” he told Breakfast on Monday.

β€œI don’t think he’s a great defender. Sometimes in football you need a bit of luck, and I think he was a bit lucky to have been there at the right time and in the right place.

“That’s what you need in football. You need a bit of luck to be successful.”

Terry, hearing her comments, asked on Twitter, “Is this a liquidation?”

Fabregas wasn’t impressed either

The former captain also posted nine trophy emojis to symbolize carrying Azpilicueta to the deck, while Fabregas responded with equally unimpressed emojis.

Azpilicueta, however, ignored Warnock’s claims – he knows how good he is – and preferred to see the funnier side when former striker Darren Bent tried to pronounce his last name, which left him seen jokingly nicknamed “Dave” upon his arrival in England.

“I was lucky to have Dave as my nickname,” he laughed on Twitter when Bent was pointed out by host Laura Woods of his mistake.
