‘A great discovery’: Tottenham defender Djed Spence receives rave reviews for Rennes debut

Spence will spend the season at the League One club, joining Spurs team-mate Joe Rodon in the squad, after a deadline move from north London.

The summer signing at Spurs has struggled for chances under Antonio Conte, playing less than 10 minutes in the Premier League on minimal substitute appearances.

The right-back has chosen Rennes over a number of other interested clubs, including Atletico Madrid, due to increased chances of playing minutes, and the move appears to have already paid off.

Spence was little tested defensively in the first half but showed his attacking skills with marauding runs down the wing, almost forcing an own goal from a Lille defender. Later, he entered the area and hit the side netting from 12 yards out. Lille equalized in the second half.

Rennes fans and commentators have already been impressed, with journalist Hortense Leblanc deeming the French side’s “very smart” move snapped him up, while one Rennes fan’s account called the defender’s attacking exploits “more than validated”.

Spence has also been described as “rich in talent”, “very strong” and a “great discovery” by viewers across the Channel. A Rennes fan asked: “Does Djed Spence have a brother who plays left-back by any chance?” while another said “…why did Tottenham loan out [Spence] for us, they are crazy.”
