A Changing of the Guard – TechCrunch

Welcome to The TechCrunch Exchange, a weekly newsletter about startups and markets. It is inspired by the daily TechCrunch+ column from which it takes its name. Want it in your inbox every Saturday? Register here.

When you start a project, it’s easy to get caught up in it. Then time passes and suddenly it’s been half a decade. Equity, a podcast I helped start when I wasn’t even working here, is one such project. The same goes for The Exchange.

I started writing a daily column on the markets the day after I got out of rehab, in 2016. The project, then called the “editor’s morning note,” evolved over time. When I joined Crunchbase, founding Crunchbase News, it was renamed Morning Markets. Then, when I had the chance to come back to TechCrunch, it relaunched without a name.

Henry Pickavet, a TechCrunch name you don’t see much but implicitly appreciate thanks to its extensive behind-the-scenes work, helped give the series a new name. This is how The Exchange came back at the end of 2019. We then added a newsletter once a week, the very missive you are reading now.

This is by no means TechCrunch’s biggest newsletter – Daily Crunch is much bigger. But the Exchange email has long been a place for me to put reports I’ve been lying around and tackle topics and questions in a more relaxed way than usual. It was, truly, a weekly joy.

This is also the last time I will write it for at least some time. Anna Heim, who you probably know by now for her regular and vital contributions to The Exchange, will take over from next week. She can ask me to throw a few words here and there, or not. It will be up to her.

What I can promise is that Anna and I are very aligned in our approach to startups, venture capital, and each other’s business climate. She was an amazing co-writer, pushing me to do more planning. I am beyond grateful for her past contributions and excited for what she has to come.

Why the change? Since taking over as Editor-in-Chief of TechCrunch+, I’ve had less time for certain tasks. I gave up writing most of Daily Crunch and took 99% off news writing (seed funding rounds etc) so I could double hire and work to get our work done more quickly and more successfully. We’ll see if I’m doing well, and I’m waiting for your comments.

Also, you know, if you haven’t joined TC+ yet, now is a great time to do so because we’re recruiting and kicking. So sign up and have fun.

But I’m more and more under water when it comes to time, and that means this newsletter with its 40,000 or 50,000 readers has fallen off my priority list to the point that it no longer makes sense. for me to keep it selfishly. He needs someone who can give him – give you – the proper attention.

So, in Anna’s hands, I leave you. The change will be an upgrade, and I hope you have fun with Anna. You can follow her on Twitter here.

I will still write the daily column, often with Anna as before. But from now on, Saturdays are Anna’s domain. Kisses, thank you and forward! —Alex
