Scenes from Florida as Hurricane Helene approaches

Helene will make landfall Thursday evening along Florida’s Big Bend coast and is expected to be the worst storm ever to hit the region. Currently a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 130 miles per hour, the storm had already brought heavy rain and flooding to parts of the state as of Thursday morning.

Many area residents, even hardened veterans of Florida’s hurricanes, chose to evacuate, leaving some areas deserted.

Forecasters are predicting record storm surges, reaching 15 to 20 feet above normal tide levels.
