Rudy Giuliani disbarred in Washington after pushing Trump’s false claims about 2020 election

WASHINGTON (AP) – Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani was disbarred in Washington on Thursday, months after losing his New York law license for pursuing false allegations that then-President Donald Trump made about his defeat in the 2020 presidential election.

The brief decision of the Washington DC appeals court, said Giuliani had failed to respond to an order explaining why he should not be disbarred in Washington after his stay in New York last summer.

Ted Goodman, Giuliani’s spokesman, called the decision “an absolute travesty and a complete miscarriage of justice.” Giuliani said he believed the claims he made on behalf of the Trump campaign were true.

“Members of the legal community who want to protect the integrity of our justice system should immediately speak out against this partisan and politically motivated decision,” Goodman said in a text message.

It’s the latest blow to the man who was once considered “America’s Mayor.” His advocacy of Trump’s false election claims also resulted in criminal charges. He also faces financial ruin after a jury awarded him the award last year. $148 million in damage to two former Georgia election workers who sued him for defamation for lies he spread about them in 2020.

Giuliani was one of Trump’s staunchest defenders in 2020, pushing unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud in the election that the Republican lost to the president Joe Biden.

Giuliani had already had his law license suspended in Washington. Last year, a review panel recommended that he be disbarred following claims in a Pennsylvania lawsuit seeking to overturn Trump’s defeat there.

Giuliani “claimed massive election fraud but had no proof,” the panel wrote.

Former Georgia election workers – Wandrea “Shaye” Moss and her mother, Ruby Freemanasked a court last month to force Giuliani to return his New York apartment, all remaining money and some of his prized New York Yankees memorabilia, including three World Series rings and a signed shirt from the player. Joe Di Maggio.

Freeman and Moss also claimed the $2 million Giuliani previously said Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign owed him. They also sought to take control of another Giuliani property — his condominium in Palm Beach, Florida — through another legal mechanism known as receivership.

Giuliani filed for bankruptcy shortly after the defamation verdict in December. But a judge in July abandoned his businessciting failure to comply with court orders, failure to disclose his sources of income, and his apparent refusal to hire an accountant to review his books.

Giuliani pleaded not guilty to nine criminal charges in the Arizona case alleging he spread false claims of voter fraud after the 2020 election. He is separately indicted in Georgia with Trump and other allies of the former president accused of trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat in the state.
