Here’s Who’s Replacing JD Vance and Tim Walz in Vice Presidential Debate Prep

Republican vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance and the Democratic vice presidential candidate, the governor. Tim Walz are gearing up for the first and only vice presidential debate of the 2024 race next week, and both teams are in the running preparation medium for a prime time audience.

Here’s Who’s Replacing JD Vance in Tim Walz’s Debate Prep

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg replaces Vance in Walz’s debate preparation sessions, according to a campaign official familiar with the preparation.

Buttigieg was praised for his debating skills during the 2020 Democratic primaries and replaced former Vice President Mike Pence in Harris’ debate prep. A former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, Buttigieg has also made frequent appearances on Fox News, earning him the nickname “Slayer Pete” from the Los Angeles Times for being a “rhetorical assassin” on the 24-hour news network.

Here’s Who’s Replacing Tim Walz in JD Vance Debate Prep

Republican Representative Tom Emmer replaces Walz in Vance’s debate preparation sessions, according to three sources familiar with Vance’s debate preparations.

Emmer, a law graduate and House majority leader, hails from Walz’s home state of Minnesota, which gives Vance’s team an understanding of how Walz operates. Buttigieg, a Midwestern native like Vance, is known for his willingness to appear on Fox News and effectively take the Democrats’ message beyond their core audience.

Walz said he expects Vance to be well prepared.

“Look, he’s… he’s a law professor at Yale. I’m a public school professor, so we know where he stands on this,” Walz told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow after the incident. Debate of September 10 between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump in Philadelphia. “…I fully expect that Senator Vance, as a United States senator, a Yale law man, will come well prepared.”

The debate will be moderated by CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Norah O’Donnell and Face the Nation moderator and CBS News chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan.
