Fantasy Football Week 4: Waiver Picks

Everyone should know the drill by now: Each week, we highlight the top prospects available in at least 50% of Yahoo fantasy football leagues. If you have urgent roster needs, the names below can probably help.

Another week, another multi-TD game for Darnold. He has 449 passing yards and six touchdowns in his last two games against the Niners and Texans, two legitimate opponents — teams we all expect to make deep playoff runs.

Justin Jefferson was ridiculous against Houston, as usual, catching six balls for 81 yards and a touchdown. Darnold hit six different receivers that day, four of whom reached the end zone. He’s playing so well that the league itself has practically declared him an MVP candidate (which may or may not age well). At the very least, it is the latest success story of Kevin O’Connell’s rehabilitation.

Let’s remember that we have yet to see a fully operational version of the Vikings’ offense, with Jefferson, Jordan Addison, TJ Hockenson and Aaron Jones all simultaneously in the mix. We can’t rule out the possibility that Darnold’s best weeks are actually ahead of him.

He twisted his left knee on Sunday but recovered quickly, missing only two shots. Darnold to undergo further testingbut the injury appears unlikely to keep him out of Lambeau in Week 4.

Recommended FAB Offer (assuming a budget of $100): $11

Apparently Smith and DK Metcalf will be meeting on one of these every week:

Smith had 200 yards passing by halftime, finishing with 289 yards and a touchdown. He’s undefeated and seems pretty comfortable in his team’s new offense.

We’ll remind you once again that Smith is just a year removed from a top-five pick and his receiving corps has no shortage of playmakers. He’s also headed to a delicious (but not easy) matchup Monday in Detroit in Week 4.

  • Justin Fields leads a team to 3-0 and is coming off a game in which he scored a try by passing and another by running. He’s headed to a friendly in Indianapolis, so he’s definitely on the fantasy radar. We shouldn’t see Russell Wilson behind the pivot anytime soon.

  • Andy Dalton Dalton just elevated the Panthers’ offense to the level of competent, watchable players, at least for a week. He can be superflexed with only a slight trepidation. Dalton has two rematches coming up against Cincinnati and Chicago, if those details interest you.

The Bucs didn’t get much to cheer about Sunday, but they did get another big day from Irving. The Oregon rookie carried the ball nine times for 70 yards and caught three passes for 14, outscoring Rachaad White by 49 yards from scrimmage. He’s a real treat with the ball in his hands:

Irving has carried the ball 25 times for 154 yards in three weeks, while White has converted 31 attempts for just 66 yards. There’s no doubt we have a committee on our hands in Tampa Bay. White’s receiving prowess will clearly keep him in the mix, but he doesn’t produce highlights like the one above — or like this one right here:

This is ridiculous, rookie. Add Irving anywhere you can use a dynamic runner with big-play ability.

A week after his two-touchdown performance against the Titans, Allen threw for 68 total yards on 14 touchdowns against New England. He didn’t just rack up stats in a short-term game situation. Allen did damage both early and late, often sharing the field with Breece Hall.

The rookie appears to be more than just a nuisance for Hall managers. Instead, he’s a full-fledged committee member in New York’s backfield. At 6’1″ and 230 pounds, he’s a punisher with significant speed. It didn’t take long for him to carve out a standalone fantasy value. Flexibility as needed.

Dallas seems intent on keeping its committee in the backfield, but it’s worth noting that Dowdle has earned the start in two straight games. He also leads the team in carries (23) and rushing yards (88), while catching eight passes for 59 yards on 11 targets. If you feel compelled to start a Cowboys back against the Giants in Week 4, Dowdle is the best option.

  • Roschon Johnson was surprisingly busy Sunday, converting 12 touches for 62 total yards and looking pretty efficient along the way.

  • Cam Akers Akers had a quiet afternoon replacing the injured Joe Mixon on Sunday, but he did manage to convert his only reception into a short touchdown. If Mixon remains sidelined for the next game against the Jaguars, Akers will remain a part of the replacement plan.

  • As expected, Samaje Perine played a supporting role in Kansas City’s backfield on Sunday night. He was outscored by Carson Steele, 18-9. Still, he has enough points to earn a roster spot in deeper leagues, given the quality and ceiling of the team’s offense. We also remind you that Clyde Edwards-Helaire can re-join this committee from week 5.

  • Alexander Mattison He turned his six touches into 44 yards and another touchdown on Sunday. He has stubbornly refused to let Zamir White visit the end zone over the first three weeks, which is not very courteous. Mattison has a series of unattractive matchups ahead of him (Cle, at Den, Pit), but he remains a viable player in big leagues.

  • There is no need to jump on it Tyler Badie Not yet, except in the deepest leagues. But it’s worth noting that he carried the ball nine times for 70 yards in Denver’s win at Tampa Bay, further complicating an already-tough backfield. Badie was a preseason hero but hadn’t found much opportunity in the regular season until Sunday.

I have to tell you, it was pretty awesome to be among the 16% of managers who listed Jennings and actually started him on Sunday. He became an obvious choice late in the week, when Deebo Samuel and George Kittle were both scratched. But the decision to insert him into a starting lineup had more to do with your level of desperation.

It turned out to be one of the correct answers of week 3:

Jennings finished with 11 receptions for 175 yards and three grabs on 12 targets, by far the biggest performance of his respectable but still not fantasy-relevant career.

We can’t promise he’ll have another game like Sunday, but a hat trick of touchdowns makes him an automatic addition in any league. He hosts the Patriots and Cardinals at home in the next two games, and neither Samuel nor Kittle are guaranteed to return this week.

With three weeks in the books, Lazard is having essentially the season you would have hoped to get from Mike Williams or Malachi Corley. Lazard has three home runs on his 16 targets and has been a big part of the offense each week. The man has spent every season of his NFL career as a teammate of Aaron Rodgers, so there’s no denying the rapport between these two players.

Lazard is expected to remain heavily involved next week when the Jets host the Broncos. Presumably Patrick Surtain II will be busy with Garrett Wilson, leaving several other New York receivers in more favorable coverage situations.

In the context of this season, any tight end who has a 10-reception, 97-yard game is an immediate and urgent priority. Kmet was excellent Sunday in a frantic, lopsided Bears loss in Indy. He emerged as the easy button for Caleb Williams, something the team had failed to identify before Week 3. Chicago has a friendly on deck with the Rams and Keenan Allen (heel) is not a sure thing to return.

  • Darnell Mooney He’s been very valuable in those back-to-back weeks, with 154 yards receiving, 11 receptions and a touchdown against the Eagles and Chiefs. He’s simply been a much bigger part of the game plans than most of us anticipated.

  • Quentin Johnston He had just two targets in Sunday’s loss at Pittsburgh, but one of them resulted in his team’s only touchdown. He has three rushes in his last two games and figures to be the most tenured member of the Chargers’ receiving corps.

  • Wan’Dale Robinson had another all-PPR day, catching seven balls for 61 yards on eight targets. He’s capable of similar reception totals in any week, regardless of opponent.

  • Jalen Nailor has made home runs in each of Minnesota’s first three games and is working with the most in-shape passer on Earth, so we’re not going to suggest his streak can’t continue against Green Bay in Week 4.

  • Jakobi Meyers is simply too good a player in real life to remain as widely available in fantasy and he’s coming off a useful stat line (7-62-1), even if he did most of his damage in the fourth quarter of a hopeless game.

  • If you absolutely must sign a member of the New England receiving room (which would be a terrible league executive), By Mario Douglas is probably the guy to get it. He delivered an eight-touch, 78-yard performance against the Jets on Thursday night.

  • Noah Fant He caught all six of his targets against Miami, finishing with 60 yards and no points. Did your fantasy tight end do better? Probably not. Fant could benefit from a pass-heavy game in Detroit on Monday night.

The Saints have held each of their three opponents to under 20 points while racking up 11 sacks and seven turnovers. This defense is legit, no doubt about it. This week, they travel to Atlanta to face a less mobile version of Kirk Cousins than usual, in a game that should feature a lot of dropbacks.

This recommendation is less about the upcoming game against the Jets and more about the obvious quality of Denver’s defense. Patrick Surtain II has eliminated three of the league’s most talented receivers in the early weeks, which gives this group a huge advantage against any opponent. He’s a huge problem for Garrett Wilson in the upcoming game. The following week, this D/ST should deliver double-digit totals against the Raiders. Denver has generated 11 sacks and four takeaways in three games.
